Welcome to our Chapter 2 Book Club, where widows and widowers come together online to explore the world of literature, share stories, and connect with fellow members who understand the journey of grief and renewal.
Building upon the success of our festive drop-ins, we’re excited to invite you to join us for our free monthly gatherings, starting this March!
Mark your calendars for the first Tuesday of every month at 8:30 PM, as we delve into the pages of captivating books and embark on enriching discussions. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just looking to discover new stories, our book club is open to all widows and widowers, regardless of membership status.
This Month's Book
For our inaugural meeting, we’ve selected “A Pocketful of Happiness” by the talented Richard E. Grant.
Richard E. Grant emigrated from Swaziland to London in 1982, with dreams of making it as an actor, when he unexpectedly met and fell in love with renowned dialect coach Joan Washington. Their relationship and marriage, navigating the highs and lows of Hollywood, parenthood and loss, lasted almost forty years. When Joan died in 2021, her final challenge to him was to find ‘a pocketful of happiness in every day’.
This honest and frequently hilarious memoir is written in honour of that challenge – Richard has faithfully kept a diary since childhood, and in these entries he shares in raw detail everything he has experienced : both the pain of losing his beloved wife, and the excitement of their life together, from the role that transformed his life overnight in Withnail & I to his thrilling Oscar nomination thirty years later for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Told with candour in Richard’s utterly unique style, A Pocketful of Happiness is a powerful, funny and moving celebration of life’s unexpected joys.
You do not need to be a Chapter 2 member to join, but you must be a widow or widower. By widow(ers) we mean anyone who has lost a significant other regardless of marital status or sexual preference.
Join us on Zoom as we embark on this literary journey together, finding solace, companionship, and perhaps a few unexpected surprises along the way. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to connect with a supportive community and rediscover the joy of reading.
